brain. let's talk about today because the wind is going to be the big issue along with the much colder temperatures. yesterday upper 50s and today the temperatures in the upper 20s. we're 40 right now and upper 30 to around 40 the rest of the day and very windy. wind advisory north and west until 6:00 p.m. there's the precip that came through mainly rain we switched over the a brief period of snow places like olney and into howard county, frederick and carroll as well up to hagerstown but not much at all. 29 martinsburg, a couple of slick spots in places well north and west of town and still in the 40s south and east. and as i said the winds are going to be a problem. the windchills in the teens right now and the shenandoah valley. 3 below in garrett county where they get a foot of snow from this. for about the last half hour or 40 minutes. good morning everybody. on the northbound side of 95, i have good news for you. that ramp to the inner loop of the beltway where that accident

was long-standing has been cleared. let's take a live look right now in our camera on the northbound side where they're moving the camera around because it was cleared and now they're going to the normal shot. in the meantime, expect delays from lorton heading up to springfield with the lanes now open. back to the maps, if you're planning to head south on i-270 from frederick, everything is fine until route 80. it's going to slow down there to route 109 because of a disabled vehicle. it's now been moved to the shoulder, we'll take a live look up in frederick. and as i said up here it's fine. it's when you get to route 80 and you are been that that things are going to show -- urbanna that things are going to slow down. looking good here until you hit i would say new hampshire avenue then it's going to slow to georgia. coming up in my next report, another look around the area at 6:12. back to you guys. thank you. the top of the hour let's get a check on the stories happening today. friday, first lady michelle obama will visit hay field's secondary school in fairfax county and join the cast of the

clear. he wants all of the folks here who have been camping out in mcpherson square for three months now to leave and possibly go over to freedom plaza. he says that encampment is more organized and sanitary. the health department has concerns about hypothermia. fire and carbon monoxide poisoning due to heating sources used inside tents to keep folks warm. and a major rat infestation forted the occupiers to recently dismantle their food tents. >> yes, by us having food in here increases the rats only not a lot. but a little bit. and we trying our best to get rid of the rats. we already got the food situation dealt with. we got nooned in the park. >> we clean it up each and every day. we walk around and pick up trash and dispose of whatever that needs to be disposed. it's up to the garbage people the pick the trash up. not us. >> reporter: the major

difference between freedom and mcpherson square? the tokes here are the mcpherson square are essentially sleeping on mud and a major concern as well is that we the taxpayer just paid about several hundred thousand dollars to get this park recently rehabbed. new sod, planted in this area. likely that whole process is going to have to happen all over again when and if the occupiers move out. back to you. mike, jessica? >> thank you delia. delia goncalves live at the occupy d.c. protests this morning in mcpherson square. well people in d.c.'s au park neighborhood got a chance to find out how police plan to respond after a recent wave of muggings in their neighborhood. investigators suspect however it's a group of street thugs who are responsible for this. d.c. police chief cathy lanier assured residents there will be a stronger police presence in their neighborhoods. but she says the police need their help. >> the good thing about neighborhoods like that is that residents are very civic mined

and they're very aware. and they'll start reporting suspicious activity. they'll give us the tips that we need. >> police have stepped up patrols and now have plain clothes officers in ward 2 as well. we have a commuter alert a heads-up for riders on three separate metro lines this weekend. the blue and the orange lines, there will be no service between l'enfant plaza and eastern market. that begins tonight at 10:00 and goes through monday night. shuttle buses will get you around the closure but add 20 to 30 minutes for your trip. also want to expect delays this weekend on the red line. there will be single tracking in two spots dupont circle to vainnesses and takoma to forest glen. maryland governor martin o'malley is backtracking a bit from his idea to raise the state sales tax. wednesday, just hours before the legislative session began, he noticed the idea to hike the tax from 6% to 7%.

lawmakers in his own party were not happy about. his aides said it was unlikely. o'malley is expected to ask for a hike in the state's gas tax already. here's a report card. the free state gets the top grade in the annual rankings from education week. maryland public schools were the only ones to get a b. plus in student achievement. the magazine called the state an example of all-around strong performers. virginia is one of three states the get a b. average. the district got a c. minus. it is 6:06 and i am watching your money. nobody wants to hear the phrase you're fired, that is unless you're the ceo of a top company and you have a fat golden parachute waiting for you. take for example leo apathaker, when he was dumped by hewlett- packard last september, there is than a year on the -- less

jermantown. more on maryland roadways coming up in my next report, at 6:18. video allegedly showing marinesurinating on the bodies of taliban fighters will not stop effort for peace in afghanistan. the defense secretary leon panetta condemned the video thursday and promised a full investigation. the video released wednesday supposedly shows a marine team based in camp lejeune, north carolina. an army officer recommends court-martial for bradley manning, he's the soldier who gave 700,000 classified documents to the website wikileaks. actress heather locklear is in a california hospital this morning. this is file video of her, she was taken to the e. r. yesterday but no word why at this point. police are not investigating they say. if you stop by the lincoln memorial today. you will see a group of local

students reenacting probably the most famous speech ever delivered there. >> because i have a dream. [ cheering and applause ] that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. i have a dream today. >> students from watkins elementary will recite martin luther king jr.'s i have a dream speech. he delivered the speech back in 1963. now over the last few years the martin luther king jr. holiday has towned into isdy -- turned into isdy of service and vol -- a day of service and volunteering, emily davis is the director of development at volunteer fairfax and thanks so much for coming in. what do you have going on this weekend? >> we have a very exciting event this monday, martin luther king jr. day. we are dinghy together a family vol -- doing give together -- a family volunteer day. young families with young children can come to a central location and work on volunteer

projects together. >> you take a bunch of people and match them up with charities that are in need. what sort of activities are you going to be doing on monday? >> we have a variety of activities which are all very direct service as far as kids can create something. they're making chew toys for animals in a shelter. they're making valentines for seniors and helping make compost. all of the wonderful things they're doing and they're going to directly help people. >> what age groups? how young and how old can they be to volunteer for the actives? >> volunteering is really all ages but give together is aimed at elementary aged kids and we created it because that's an age group with a very hard time finding volunteer opportunities. >> i have a 6-year-old and constantly looking for things for us to get involved with. for people who are interested in volunteer fairfax or for monday, what's the best way to do so? >> check out the website. volunteerfairfax.org, we have information on what's going on

nonetheless but northern fauquier counties and everybody, up toward the pennsylvania border, shenandoah valley in the mountains and the problem as you go to the west side of the divide is that we're lookinged snow as well. in place -- at snow as well. in places like garrett county, the snow and winds which are now gusting to 35 miles per hour, near blizzard conditions and that's why we've got schools closed in garrett county and delays in mineral and alleghany county this morning. gusts to near 30 in annapolis and easton and gusting to 20 at the southern maryland. patuxent river naval air station. our bus stop forecast, partly sunny, windy. chilly. temperatures running from the mid 30s even some low 30s now to maybe low 40s. probably have to nudge these temps down a few degrees. skies are becoming clear outside. the precip is gone and we'll see sunshine and 38 at 9:00. around 40 or so for temperatures this afternoon. but it won't feel like it. winds southwest to westerly from 20, maybe 30 miles an hour

with those gusts 40 to 50. possibly even 55 out west. hey we're look at the rain that moved through overnight. there was a brief changeover to snow in places like oh clarksburg, frederick, mount airy, olney and own over to columbia but that is quickly left the region and we are looking at the last of the rain now along and east of the bay. it is just quickly pulling out of here. so don't worry about that unless you're traveling well west. where we've got 14 now in oakland. 30 in winchester and hagerstown. we're 40 and still 45 in southern maryland with windchills which are down in the low 30s in town. 20s not that far north and west and now teens out toward the shenandoah valley. clear skies on the michael & son weather camera. looking good this morning with a temperature of 40. cloudy skies on the hour but we're clearing out. west winds at 13 and the barometer is going to start to go up. as the cold air comes in the snows will persist in the mountains over the next 24 to 48 hours and really pile up in the ski areas. so good news for skiers. just bundle up. 40 today going to feel like

means some school closings and delays, it's been warm but changes are coming -- happy friday, thanks for starting your day with us. i'm mike hydeck, andrea will be back next week. >> i'm sitting in for her, i'm jessica doyle. meteorologist howard bernstein is live on the weather terrace with the forecast how is it out there howie? >> temperatures are dropping and you're really going to feel the difference from yesterday when it was delightful with temps well up in the 50s and even touched 60 in one or two spots. today windchill will feel like it's in the 20s or worse in some spots. the rain is east of us and pulling away quickly. partly cloudy skies now and 39. it will winds are going to be a real problem with the wind

advisory until 6:00 p.m. you can see the rain that pushed through. it did briefly change over to snow in hagerstown and upper montgomery and howard county and up to baltimore and carroll counties as well but now well east of bus the snows continuing in the -- us with the snows continuing in the mountains, where it's 14 in  oakland. you get near whiteout conditions at times. still 39 for us and mid 40s in southern maryland but the winds not friendly making it feel like 33 in town but quickly into the 20s and even teens north and west. bundle up it's going to be a cold day and a cold weekend. i'll have it will full seven day forecast come up in about 13 minutes. we go inside now to my buddy monika samtani with timesaver traffic. you have a lot of delays all around town to deal with you. good morning everybody. this is the beltway. that's been doing fine. now if you're going on the inbound side of 66 or the dulles toll road. normal slow traffic. no problems to report across the american legion bridge. first of all here's the beltway north of town. on the outer loop you'll hit

march primary. prince william county republican mar sam will launch a charge against former senator and governor george allen. there are three other candidates, the primary is coming up in june. fire trucks and police vehicles will line the route today from woodsboro, maryland to arlington national cemetery. that is where army specialist ronald wildrick will be buried today. the 24-year-old was from woods boar rein frederick county. -- woods woodsboro in frederick county. he leaves behind two daughters. >> how wonderful of a person he was and he's definitely going to be a very missed part of their life. >> i hope not just his family but the entire county understands the costs that have been paid by the military families and that we are motivated by that to live lives and to build a country that's worthy of their sacrifices. >> wildrick's military career also included two years serving

in the old guard. that's the ceremonial unit responsible for burying the dead in arlington. mayor gray has a message for occupy protestors in mcpherson square -- get out. delia goncalves is live at the protests so why does the mayor want the square cleared delia? >> reporter: the mayor is citing some health concerns from the health director who recently visited the site here at mcpherson square and cited lots of rats in the area and other safety and health concerns. it has been on the mondays of a lot of these occupiers here. whether or not the city wants them to move and here to talk to me more about the is bear -- about the is bear. he was just -- about that is bear. he was just briefed. the general assembly place -- >> that's basically our government where the people decide how we're going to do it. and we were just told that we will not be moving. we have to hold the square. part of that is just keeping one or two people or whatnot

over the winter. our whole goal is to hold the square. hold what we occupy. >> reporter: and we know that the mayor has offered i guess as an alternative folks to go over to join the other folks at freedom plaza. what do you think about that? you said that would change the movement in some ways. >> that would change the movement because that's a no-go for us because we have to hold mcpherson square. >> reporter: what's the value -- the importance, the significance of being here at mcpherson square. >> basically the fact that we're occupying is a significance. people see us, people see us and people know we're here. and if we lose the visibility here, we allow them to move us, people are going to say this movement cannot last. >> reporter: you know the missouri has lasted for three months -- movement has lasted for three months here. threemans at the park heartless -- three months at the park at least. you know that a lot of your neighbors aren't happy with your presence here. the help department has come in and dismantled the food tent. i mean how do you clean up your

delia goncalves live at the occupy d.c. protests in mcpherson square this morning. it's easy to forget sometimes that there are two protests encampments in the district. delia is at the one in mcpherson square and then the stop the machine protests started in october there at freedom plaza. the website says the goals are to draw attention to the economic, social and environmental justice issues. the time right now is 6:37 and i am watching your money. the parent company of the blueman bottom dollar food grocery stores is closing 126 stations nationwide. six six bloom stores in virginia -- one more in walkersville, maryland as well as the bottom dollar food in alexandria. outlet stores are coming to national harbor. the prince george's county planning board signed off on the idea last night. some people living nearby were opposed to the tangier outlets

site saying it will ruin the historic views of oxon hill manor. they could be open next year. save some money this weekend with a visit to the national park. all 397 of them will be free saturday, sunday and mondays. that includes fred ricksburg and shenandoah. today marks a somber anniversary in our region. it was 30 years ago today air florida flight 90 crashed shortly after takeoff from national airport. 74 people on the plane were killed. the 737 went down during a snowstorm. and slammed into the northbound side of the 14th street bridge. four drivers on the bridge were kill. the plane then -- killed. the plane then went into the potomac. five people were plucked from the icy water, it was seen live on television. the ntsb ruled the pilots should have aborted takeoff because of the snow and ice on the wings of the plane. the people who lost their lives that day did not die in vain.

the crash revolutionized the way planes are now de-iced. now planes get one last de- icing just before takeoff. it may cost you extra time in the wintertime but it could save your life. there's a permanent honor to a hero from the day. its official name? the arlen d. williams jr. memorial bridge. he's the man who kept passing the lifeline to other passengers when it was dropped from a helicopter into the river. he helped save their lives. but when the chopper came back for him, he was gone. the bridge was renamed in his honor in 1983. now that same day of the crash, metro's first deadly incident on the train system. the train derailed near the federal triangle station killing three people. you know channel 9 here. >> there are people still working at the station who were covering the tragedies of those days -- that day.

welcome back, 6:4 # 4. your weather first on this friday morning. the snow rain and snow has ended but we have a lot of wind in its wake and all the counties in orange, wind advisory does not include the district fairfax or prince george's county. but that wind advisory until 6:00 p.m. gusts 50 to maybe 55 in some of the areas out west. going to be a lot of winds today at least through 6:00 p.m. tonight still going to be wind just won't be as windy.

we're looking at the 40 degrees today, windy with windchills in the 20s, done with the precip except in the mountain where is the snow is going to fly all day. tomorrow, sunday, less wednesday by sunday and -- wind by sunday and 42 on monday. there's a pedestrian struck though first on m street northeast and a cruiser telling us to tell you to use m or patterson instead. the outer loop is slowing down 95 to georgia and back over to virginia. northbound 395 just a bit heavy across the 14th street bridge. >> we couldn't get enough of maysa and she struck around with us and -- stuck around with us and sing a little bit more before we head off. have a great weekend, stay safe
